In a debate article in Eskilstuna-Kuriren, Peter Hellgren, CEO of Consid, and Anna Edstedt, National Responsible for the gender equality platform Q by Consid, discuss the gender equality challenges in the IT industry.
The role of digitalization in societal development has already proven to be strong and is likely to continue shaping societal structure, the economy, and how we live our lives. However, the IT and tech industry is currently grappling with significant gender equality issues, with women accounting for just over 30 percent of the workforce—a figure that has remained unchanged over the past decade. This underrepresentation not only has a negative impact on the industry itself but also on society as a whole, posing risks to future infrastructure.
Companies in the IT industry bear a great responsibility, both for the current situation and for driving change forward. This involves how we communicate about the industry and the culture we foster within it. Since 2013, Consid has been working through its gender equality platform, Q by Consid, to bring about structural changes across the entire industry and establish a work culture based on inclusivity. Together, we must change the way we talk about the industry, ensuring that the mantra &#8220;there are no women or diversity in tech&#8221; does not become a self-fulfilling prophecy, and actively work to highlight role models who can inspire others.
The low percentage of women in the industry is not due to a lack of interest in IT and tech. Insight Intelligences conducts an annual nationwide survey involving one thousand women aged 16 to 30. In the respondents of the 2023 survey, seven out of ten indicate that they would consider working in some form of IT-related profession. Alarmingly, six out of ten state that they do not want to work in the IT industry because it is associated with terms like male-dominated, geeky, and challenging.
The report also highlights that only one in ten young women in Sweden has a female role model in the IT and tech field, and 42 percent wish for clearer communication regarding what the profession entails. We aim to change that. 
There are several ways to achieve this, such as through mentorship programs like Q Mentoria. Through Q Mentoria, Consid provides guidance for women and non-binary individuals interested in tech while highlighting those who are already established in the industry. It is a fact that there is an underrepresentation of women in the industry, but it does not mean that IT and tech are fields intended only for men or that there is a lack of competent women to be inspired by.
Gender equality should be a given in all industries, and many professions still exhibit an uneven gender distribution. However, what sets the IT industry apart is its significant influence and control over people&#8217;s everyday lives. Tech and IT shape the society we live in and have become an integral part of our lives today.
