Software Engineer

Mattias Wetterlind

Mattias describes himself as curious, creative and adventurous. He is a person who is driven by solving complex problems, preferably in new ways. In his role as a software engineer at Consid, he gets to fulfill his need for variety and challenges. For Mattias, software dvelopment is not just about making things work, but about shaping sustainable, smart and future-proof solutions.

My superpower? To see solutions where others see problems. There's usually a way, it's just a matter of not giving up before you find it.

Curious problem solver with technical depth

It’s a sunny spring day when we meet Mattias Wetterlind at Consid’s office in Karlskrona. He has just finished a morning meeting and sits down with a cup of coffee in his hand. As the sun creeps in through the window, he begins to talk, with an energy that is infectious, about software development, AI and the importance of never stopping learning.

– I like to learn something new every day. The combination of creative thinking and logical problem solving is what really caught me, he says with a smile.

Mattias sees himself as a creative problem solver, someone who is not afraid of the seemingly impossible, but rather triggered by it.

– Often the first step is to try to break down that ‘impossible’ into smaller, more tangible pieces. For me, a lot of it is about daring to change perspectives and not being afraid to try new approaches, he explains.

He describes this ability as his own “superpower” – to see solutions where others see obstacles.

– There’s usually a solution somewhere, it’s just a matter of not giving up before you find it.

A purposeful journey

His journey into the world of IT began in high school, where he studied science with a focus on mathematics and computing. This was followed by a Master’s degree in Game and Software Engineering at BTH, a natural step for someone who was equally interested in game development and programming.

After graduation, he started his career at Ericsson, where he built a solid technical foundation to stand on. Even then, his interest in AI began to take shape, something that deepened as the technology evolved.

– My background in game development proved unexpectedly useful when graphics cards started to be used for AI calculations.

A culture where ideas are given space

When Mattias joined Consid in 2019, he was attracted by the company’s values.

– I really liked the vision of building the company you want to work for. It has matched very well with reality.

He particularly highlights the unpretentious culture, the possibility to influence and the support for own initiatives, some of the things he appreciates most about Consid. He describes a strong sense of solving things together, which according to him permeates the entire work environment and makes you feel both included and encouraged to contribute.

Mattias’ career at Consid has been both broad and deep. He has worked with everything from web and DevOps to graphics optimization in the game engine Frostbite at EA, where he contributed to the performance of Battlefield. Other assignments have involved developing AI solutions for clients such as Securitas and Bilprovningen.

Today he works at Saab Digital Air Traffic Management, where he gets to combine several of his interests such as, C++, TypeScript, DirectX and AI-based object detection.

– This assignment summarizes many of my strengths and I really appreciate the breadth of my role while having the opportunity to continue to immerse myself in my specialist areas such as AI and 3D graphics.

Visions of AI and the role of humans

He sees the future of AI and machine learning as both exciting and crucial.

– I believe that AI will become even more integrated into our everyday lives, not just as a tool but as a partner. My hope, perhaps a bit colored by science fiction and many of Isaac Asimov’s books, is a collaboration between humans and AI where we can use our respective strengths to solve really complex problems together in new innovative ways.

Writing sustainable code is also something he is passionate about.

– I strive to write clean, modular and well-structured code. It should be easy to understand, reuse and build on, he says enthusiastically.

Team spirit, learning and skydiving

Teamwork is something Mattias values highly, both in daily life and in the larger projects.

– Openness, unpretentiousness and humor are important ingredients. The best idea will win, no matter who came up with it, he says with a smile.

And what does he do when he’s not coding?

– I’m often in the air! My biggest hobby is skydiving, where I am training to become an instructor. It’s not just an adrenaline rush, it’s a nature experience. A sunset at 200 km/h, with a rainbow on the horizon, beats most things.

For balance, there’s also the guitar, the piano and a steady dose of science fiction.

– Unwinding with music or a really good science fiction book, I’ve always been fascinated by the worlds and visions of the future they paint.
